There are several reasons why you may need to order the NYS driving records of your employees, including:
- Verifying the identity of an applicant: If you're looking to hire a new employee in New York, you should obtain his or her NYdriving record in addition to a background check, to learn more about the applicant. If the job requires driving, you would not want to hire someone with a suspended or revoked license.
- Minimizing liability: Your company could be held liable for the misconduct of an employee or driver who operates a company-owned vehicle. Employing an individual to drive a company-owned car or truck without a valid license or proper class of license could lead to potential damages or lawsuits.
- Checking license classes: Making sure your employee holds the correct type of license and has all required endorsements.
You should regularly check the driving record of your employees to verify their driving status and driver's license class.
NOTE: If you do not verify your DPPA permissible use on your form, the NY DMV will issue you a masked driver abstract (see the “Types of New York Driving Records' section above).
